As the need for managing our waste sustainably becomes more apparent policy makers are revising their strategies and placing more focus on waste prevention. At European level a waste prevention target is being considered for inclusion in the revision of the Directive on Waste and for the first time waste prevention targets have been set at national level. In order to meet these ambitious targets it is clear that all stakeholders including local and central government, manufacturers, retailers, waste management companies and the public will have to work in partnership. This paper presents the Waste Prevention Advisor initiative - this ambitious project is a partnership between West Sussex County Council, the district and borough councils in the county and the Waste & Energy Research Group at the University of Brighton. Volunteers attend a 30 hour waste prevention training course and on successful completion of the course they work in partnership with the Council to promote waste prevention in their own communities. This paper presents a background to the project, the structure of the training course, the impact of the initiative and plans for future development of the project.
