Ingerland Expects: Football, National Identity and World Cup 2002

Abstract

England is a football nation in search of ways to celebrate pride without prejudice. At the World Cup the team will represent England on the pitch and the fans will do the same in the stands and in the streets. Football has a responsibility for the state of the English national identity. Ingerland Expects explores an England fan culture with the potential to be inclusive and internationalist without losing any of its reputation for passion and commitment.
