Abstract

This paper introduces a design equation for the transverse reinforcement required for confinement in RC elliptic column sections. The proposed equation complies with the principle of axial strength recovery by core confinement once the concrete cover is lost. Analytical expressions to estimate the variation of confining stresses along the main axes of an elliptic section are also introduced.
