Abstract

This paper focuses on the speculative use of transferring crash-testing techniques common to the automotive industry to architecture. More specifically the digital simulation techniques and methods that are currently being used and developed and how these highly articulated software’s might be applied to architecture as a design tool that can also gauge the performance of the building. The performance described is that of the spatial, social, structural, and technical milieu of design in relation to the environment and its emergent conditions. This in many ways is similar to the automotive industry and how it evolves design all the way through to the end product. The paper also states that through the use of these tools and techniques in architecture we may begin to point out an instrumental trajectory for the discipline. With the possibility of producing highly performative effects that begin to validate the effectiveness of the techniques that may become viable for architecture in the not so distant future.
