Series of drawings of paint accumulations rendered as virtual landscapes. These works were developed alongside another series, “Unstable”, which examined possible links between our desires to order/systematise and to embellish. While “Unstable II” continues Stevens’ interest in paint as a representative substance, it differs from “Unstable” by focusing more on the notion of the fictitious or virtual environment, using manner (complex hatching marks denoting both tone and form, corresponding both to early drawing systems, and to contemporary computer rendering systems utilizing wire-frame models) as an important signifier in the reading of these works.
Individual works from the series exhibited at: “Encounters With Scale” (curated by Sarah Sparkes) Portman Gallery, London 2009; “Drawing(s) with Dolphins” (curated by Marcus Cope and Stephanie Moran) Crimes Town Gallery, London 2009 (other artists exhibiting in the exhibition included: Brian Dawn Chalkley, Brian Cheeswright, Yelena Popova); Art and Design at Brighton, 150 years of the Brighton College of Art, University of Brighton Gallery, Brighton, 2009; “PAINT CAN” (curated by Alison Chisholm) Travelling Gallery, Edinburgh, 2009 (other artists exhibiting in the exhibition included: George Barber, Alexis Harding, Jacco Olivier, Carol Rhodes, Ufuk Gueray); “Distant Relations” solo exhibition, Mummery and Schnelle, London, 2010; “The Library of Babel / In and Out of Place” (curated by Anna-Catharina Gebbers) 176/Zabludowicz Collection, London, 2010 (other artists exhibiting in the exhibition included: Mat Collishaw, Andreas Gursky, Gerhard Richter, Cindy Sherman).
