The Anatomy Lesson is a series of large paintings, all oil on canvas, showing representations of paint. All works in this series are generated using a hybrid process involving lighting systems, long exposure photography and digital post-production techniques augmenting traditional painting processes. The artificial appearance of the works is an important factor in the reading of these paintings.
Works from this series of paintings were first shown at “Pulse Art Fair”, New York, Thursday 27 - Sunday 30 March 2008, alongside works by Ori Gersht. Other works subsequently exhibited at “Pulse Miami”, Dec 3rd – 7th alongside works by Ori Gersht, Louise Hopkins, Michael Mueller, and Graeme Todd. A further work from the series was in the “Marmite Prize” Exhibition, Studio 1-1 Gallery, London, 27th – 30th November 2008. Another work from the series was exhibited in the exhibition: “Hinterlands” (curated by Tamsin Morse and Chloe Hoare) Trafalgar Works, Portslade, 12th July - 9th August 2009. Two works from the series were exhibited in Stevens’s solo exhibition: “Distant Relations” at Mummery and Schnelle, London, February - March 2010. “Whistling in the Dark”, solo exhibition, Permanent Gallery, Brighton, 2010. One work from the series is now in the Zabludowicz collection.
